What to Expect from the 2023 Argentine Primary Elections
The Open, Simultaneous and Mandatory Primary Elections (P.A.S.O.) are an electoral mechanism in Argentina, established by law in 2009, that allows voters to select the pre-candidates of each political front that will later compete in the general elections.
This Sunday, August 13, the internal candidacies of the coalitions and political parties for the national general elections on October 22 will be determined. In addition, they establish a minimum threshold of votes necessary to participate in October: Political parties must obtain at least 1.5% of the valid votes in order to continue in the race toward the national elections.
It should be noted that, for the elections on August 13 and October 22, the entire country must go to the polls to elect a president, vice president, 43 Parlasur representatives, 130 representatives and 24 senators.
