Jeremy S. Thompson
Senior Vice President
Edelman Global Advisory recently caught up with Jeremy S. Thompson on his professional experience, what excites him most about his work at EGA, and advice he'd give to his younger self. See our interview below and keep up with Jeremy on LinkedIn.
EGA: What excites you most about your role at EGA?
JT: I’m pretty excited to go to EDC again next year and for Tomorrowland. It’ll be my first time going to Tomorrowland so I wanna see if it lives up to the hype. But you’re probably more concerned about Edelman Global Advisory… I get pretty hyped when we get to do something incredibly challenging and find a way to make it happen, in spite of everything. That could be an innovative social or approach to content. That could be crafting messaging or creative that just really speaks to a hard to reach audience. Seeing those results is amazing. And to help teach and coach teams that do this work is what gets me out of bed each day. That and GHOST energy…
EGA: What would you say is your personal area of expertise?
JT: I specialize in crafting content and messaging that speaks to audiences on digital channels in an effective and efficient way. I’m the guy you call when the campaign needs to launch tomorrow, and that steady hand in the middle of an earthquake. It’s fun stuff.
EGA: If you could give yourself one piece of advice at the start of your career, what would it be?
JT: Figure out what your job is and learn how to do it well. When I first started my career in the health and fitness industry and then moved over to communications, I used to try to do everything, everywhere at once. There was so much pressure to be good at everything. But the reality was, once I was able to focus, hone my craft and get rid of all of the distractions I was able to grow exponentially. I also learned that your reputation shows up before you do in every meeting. People will remember how you made them feel long after you’re gone.
EGA: What past work project or accomplishment are you the proudest of and why?
JT: I worked with an incredible global team to manage Under Armour’s Run to Vote Campaign that was designed to register voters in every state where Under Armour had an office. We worked with their team to design creative, messaging and update policies to ensure voting was easy for the entire community. The project is personal to me. My parents were very active in the civil rights movement. I have family members who have been to jail protesting for the right to vote. My aunt paid a poll tax to vote. So working to ensure voter access was honestly a great moment.
EGA: What would you do if you weren’t doing this?
JT: I would have been an FBI Agent. It’s actually quite personal to me. My dad was an agent with the Bureau, specializing in kidnappings and bank robberies. It’s work that helps the community around you. I think that’s one thing that we have in common, we both like to help people in the work that we do, however we can.
EGA: If you could invite 3 people (living or dead) to a dinner party, who would you choose and why?
JT: I’m not a big fan of dinner, in fact, I hardly ever eat it. I am more of a breakfast guy, It’s the most important meal and my favorite meal of the day (shout out to the breakfast lobby). So I’d rather drag everyone to breakfast. But if I could bring anyone to breakfast, it would be Nancy Farmer who wrote one of my favorite books of all time, the Ear, the Eye and the Arm, Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) and my best friend Julian. Always gotta have your best friend at breakfast. Oh and Randy Clarke, the GM of Metro. I love public transit.
EGA: How do you like to spend your time outside of work? Do you have any special hobbies or interests?
JT: As you know, I’m a storyteller at heart so I love writing. But I also spend waayyy to much time with my friends at live music, including festivals. DC has some great music venues like Flash, Soundcheck, Echostage and some great people swing by like Slander, Zedd, Blanke, Kaskade. But I also love to travel the world to hit up festivals and to just see everything there is too see. My goal is to eventually hit up all seven continents and I’ve really got two more left…
